Established as a diocese on March 30, 1973, we have grown into a dynamic Church serving the spiritual, educational, and social needs of the faithful across our territory. Our diocese is named after Sunyani, the regional capital, which serves as our episcopal see.
Under the pastoral leadership of the Most Reverend Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, our second bishop, we strive to be a synodal Church that listens, walks together, and witnesses to God’s love through evangelization, education, healthcare, and social development.

History
Foundation & Growth
The Catholic Diocese of Sunyani was canonically erected on March 30, 1973, from territory that was originally part of the larger ecclesiastical provinces. The Very Rev. James Kwadwo Owusu was appointed as the first Bishop of the Diocese and served faithfully until his passing on December 28, 2001.
Over the years, the diocese has given birth to new dioceses: Goaso Diocese was carved out on November 8, 1997, and Techiman Diocese was established on December 28, 2007. These acts of growth testify to the missionary dynamism of the Church in this region.

Our Bishop
Most Reverend Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, DD, Ph.D. is the Second Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sunyani. He was born on August 11, 1957, at Wamanafo in the Bono Region. After his priestly formation at St. Peter’s Regional Seminary, Pedu, he was ordained a priest on July 27, 1985.
Bishop Gyamfi holds a Bachelor of Arts (First Class) in Geography and History from the University of Ghana, as well as a PhD in Geography and a Master’s degree in Education from Canada. He has served as Vice Rector and Rector of St. James Seminary, Chancellor of the Diocese, and has held various leadership roles at the national and regional levels of the Church in Ghana.
On April 14, 2003, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Sunyani. He was ordained bishop on June 28, 2003. His episcopal motto is “That all may be one” (John 17:21), reflecting his deep commitment to unity, dialogue, and synodality.
Bishop Gyamfi serves as Episcopal Chairman of DEPSOCOM and has been a member of several national boards, including the Ghana Education Service Council and the University of Education, Winneba Governing Council. He is also the Episcopal Chairman of Education for RECOWA/CERAO.

Patron Saint
The Feast Day of the Diocese of Sunyani is Christ the King, celebrated on the last Sunday of the liturgical year. This feast proclaims the universal kingship of Jesus Christ over all creation — over individuals, families, societies, and nations.
Christ the King is a powerful reminder that our ultimate allegiance is to Christ, who reigns not with earthly power but with sacrificial love, truth, and justice. Under His royal banner, the Diocese of Sunyani seeks to build a civilization of love and peace.
All parishes, institutions, and the faithful of the diocese are encouraged to celebrate this solemnity with special devotion, recognizing Christ as the center of all life and mission.

Each deanery is led by a Dean appointed by the Bishop, coordinating pastoral activities and fostering collaboration among parishes. The diocese continues to expand, planting new mission stations and serving the growing Catholic population across the Bono Region.
