The Catholic Diocese of Sunyani (CDS) was canonically erected on 1st March 1973. Before becoming a diocese, the Catholic Church in the then Brong-Ahafo Region was administered as an integral part of the then Kumasi Diocese (now Archdiocese). The first Bishop appointed to shepherd the newly erected Diocese was the Late Most Rev. James Kwadwo Owusu. Pope John Paul II appointed Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi as the second Bishop of the Diocese of Sunyani on April 14, 2003.
Located in the west-central part of Ghana, the Catholic Diocese of Sunyani is co-terminus with the Bono Region. It covers a land area of 11,481sq km. It is bounded to the north by the Savannah Region, to the east by the Bono East Region, to the south by the Ahafo and Western North Regions, and shares an international border in the West with La Côte d’Ivoire.
Ecclesiastically, the CDS is within the province of the Kumasi Archdiocese and is bounded to the north by the Damongo Diocese, to the east by the Techiman Diocese, to the South by the Goaso Diocese and the Wiawso Diocese, and to the West by the Diocese of Bondoukou in La Côte d’Ivoire.
The CDS has seven deaneries and 54parishes/quasi parishes spread across the 12 administrative districts of the Bono Region.
According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census of Ghana, the CDS (which is co-terminus with the Bono Region) has a Catholic population of 238,843, representing 19.76% of the total population of the region of 1,208,649. Of the Catholic population,114 786 are in the urban areas, whilst 124,057 are in the rural areas.
