Sunyani, September 30, 2026 — It was the turn of the Sampa Deanery to fulfil the Catholic Diocese of Sunyani’s prison apostolate, as the Deanery visited the Sunyani Central Prison on Tuesday to present foodstuffs and other essential items to the inmates, in a day marked by joy, generosity, and Christian witness.
The apostolate flows from the vision of the Bishop of Sunyani, Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, who has placed the welfare of inmates at the heart of the Diocese’s mission to the marginalised. Drawing inspiration from the words of Christ in Matthew 25:36 — “I was naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you visited me; I was in prison and you came to me” — the Bishop instituted a programme through which food items are donated to inmates, ensuring that none is forgotten.
The Church’s commitment to this ministry has remained steady and consistent. According to Supt. Agyemang Duah who received the items, said, food items have been delivered to the facility no fewer than four times this year alone, a record they say reflects the Diocese’s concern for the inmates’ welfare. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Church and the faithful for their continued generosity. He extended warm appreciation to the Sampa Deanery — comprising Sampa, Suma, Goka, Asiri, Duadaso, and Jamera Parishes — for the donation, which brought hope and encouragement to many, and offered prayers that God would richly replenish all that had been given on their behalf.
Leading the Deanery’s delegation, Very Rev. Fr. Andrew Nketiah reaffirmed its resolve to continue this ministry of mercy, reminding the faithful that every act of kindness shown to the least of our brothers and sisters is an act done unto Christ Himself. He called on parishioners and well-wishers across the Deanery to continue supporting the programme so that its impact may reach even more people in need.
The visitation stands as a renewed expression of the Catholic Diocese of Sunyani’s commitment to one of the Church’s corporal works of mercy — visiting those in prison — bringing hope, encouragement, and the love of Christ to inmates, while affirming their inherent dignity as children of God.
