Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, DD, Ph.D

Born on 11th August 1957 at Wamanafo, in the Bono Region of Ghana, Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi is the Second Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sunyani, ordained and enthroned on 28th June 2003, following his appointment by Pope Saint John Paul II on 14th April 2003.
A devoted servant of Christ and His Church, Bishop Gyamfi has dedicated his life to the proclamation of the Gospel, the formation of priests and lay faithful, Catholic education, catechesis, and the spiritual growth of the People of God. Ordained to the Sacred Priesthood on 27th July 1985, he has marked his priestly and episcopal ministry by pastoral charity, intellectual excellence, humility, and missionary zeal.
He received his secondary education at St. Hubert Minor Seminary and pursued his priestly formation at St. Peter’s Regional Seminary, Pedu. His commitment to academic and human formation led him to the University of Ghana, where he obtained a First Class Bachelor of Arts Degree in Geography and Resource Development and History in 1990. He later continued his studies in Canada, earning a Ph.D in Geography and a Master’s Degree in Education.
Throughout his ministry, Bishop Gyamfi has served the Church in many capacities, including Assistant Priest at Christ the King Cathedral, Chaplain and Tutor, Vice Rector and later Rector of St. James Seminary and Secondary School, Chancellor of the Diocese, and Episcopal Chairman for Education and Catechesis in Ghana. His pastoral leadership has greatly contributed to the strengthening of Catholic education, seminary formation, and evangelization in Ghana.
As Bishop of Sunyani, he continues to shepherd the Diocese with deep faith, wisdom, and fatherly care, guiding the faithful toward a more profound encounter with Christ through the Eucharist, Sacred Scripture, prayer, and service. His episcopal ministry reflects the mission of the Church to be a sign of hope, justice, peace, and communion in the world.
Bishop Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi remains a strong advocate for authentic Catholic values and holistic human development, tirelessly encouraging the faithful to live as missionary disciples rooted in Christ and committed to the service of humanity.
